my little apartment — NYC child photographer

The other day on Instagram, I put up a little collage of some pictures of my apartment here in the Hudson Valley. I took the pictures a couple of days ago after I saw that the gang over at A Beautiful Mess were looking for submissions for home tours. I always love getting to peek inside people’s homes!

I spent the first month or so in this apartment trying to turn it into a place I could come home to that would be peaceful, warm, and inviting. I sold almost all of my furniture in Delaware, so I got to visit all the fun thrift stores around here looking for treasures! I painted he hallway pink, the bathroom gray, and the kitchen red and beige. I wondered if I’d get sick of the pink, but it’s still my favorite space in the apartment.

My house in Delaware had three bedrooms, one of which I made into a really beautiful office for myself. (Boy oh boy do I miss all those closets!) My favorite part about the office was the DOOR — which I could shut when I wasn’t working. It’s important to me to be able to separate my workspace from my living space. So when I went looking for apartments here in the Hudson Valley, I was looking for something with two bedrooms. It had been a loooong time since I’d looked at apartments … and frankly, I was really shocked at how disgusting some of the ones I went to see were. Very expensive … and very disgusting! So it was like a breath of fresh air when I walked into this apartment on a quaint street with lovely landlords. But it’s small. And it only has one bedroom. And because of that, I almost didn’t take it. Thankfully, though, my friend Tara was with me and pointed out that I could definitely fit an “office” into the large kitchen. Although I wasn’t initially excited about that thought, that is what I did. I put up a row of tall shelves that divide the room in half. So one half is the kitchen … and the other half is my little office. When I’m in the “kitchen” portion of the kitchen, the shelves completely block my view of the office, so it really does feel like it’s own space. Mission accomplished : )

I love my floors in the kitchen! But I hate the cabinets. So I took some of cabinet doors off and put up curtains. And I added some contact paper as decorative trim on others. I’m amazed at how well the contact paper stays up! I hope it really is true and it will just peel off when I need it to!

My living room is bright and happy. And somehow … SOMEHOW I wound up in an apartment in a house where none of the neighbors have complained about my piano playing! There are three other apartments and I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a problem. But so far so good : )

I posted some pictures of the apartment for ATWT a few months ago. I’d almost forgotten how cute my little settee was!

Happy Thursday!
Kate
