3 quick tips when prepping for a family photo shoot — Hudson valley family photographer

I know how stressful preparing for a family photo shoot can be … I really do! It’s A LOT to get together. And the more people involved the in the shoot, the higher the chance that someone is bound to not be all that thrilled about heading out to a photo session.
So here are three easy, quick tips on how to help everyone stay just a little calmer for your next shoot:
  1. Prepare the outfits long in advance so that you don’t have any last-minute stresses. And MOST IMPORTANTLY … fight the urge to dress anyone in clothing that they don’t love. It’s just not worth it. The cutest outfit ever won’t make up for a sour puss expression. We want happy people : )
  2. Accept that things will probably not go as planned. I’m not expecting them too!! In fact, I’m expecting a possible skinned knee, spilled juice, and definitely at least one toddler meltdown … and maybe even a moderately grumpy Dad ; ) And it’s all totally ok! I know we’re still going to get beautiful photos. We’re going to make a plan for your session … and then we’re going to roll with whatever happens. I’ve learned over the last 12 years of photographing families that this is truly the key to successful family photo shoots.
  3. Plan on arriving to your session 30 minutes earlier. Honestly, that probably means you’ll end up arriving right on time : ) I’m not saying this because I don’t want to wait for you. It’s just that I know that it’s CRAZY hard to get everyone ready on time. And I also know that a tense ride in the car after frantically rushing people out the door never makes anyone … least of all Mom … very happy. So just automatically schedule in that time buffer so if it takes longer than expected to get someone dressed or you hit traffic, it’s no big deal.
