It’s been bonfires galore the last few weekends and I’m so excited! I was really mourning the end of summer ( I mean, I actually broke down in tears the other day because I just want summer to keep going a few more months) … but then we lit that fire and I suddenly got excited for sweaters, leaves, and fall family photo shoots! This is a portrait photographer’s busiest season … and I can’t wait to see so many of my clients in the next few months!

One of the hardest parts of a photo shoot is picking out what everyone will wear. Raise your hand if you agree!

Here’s my number one rule for picking out clothes for a family photo shoot …

No one should be dressed in clothes they don’t like or anything that is truly not their style. Why? Because nothing is more beautiful in photos than true happiness … and it’s really hard to be truly happy if you don’t feel comfortable.

I have a few other suggestions … including making sure Mom dresses herself first. We ladies are so hard on ourselves … so dress yourself, LOVE your look, and then coordinate everyone else around you.

One other suggestion is to layer up. Vests, scarves, hats, and jackets are great for quickly changing temperatures during your shoot, but also help add texture, color, and interest to the photo.

And lastly, if you truly just feel so overwhelmed at the thought of dressing your family … trust the experts. Simply head to an Old Navy, Gap, or J Crew and grab anything in the store. I guarantee that everything will coordinate because all three of those stores typically coordinate an entire season’s collection of clothes for men, women, and kids. They do the work for you : )
