pet peeves — hudson valley photographer

Welcome to day three of my 30-day writing challenge.

Today the question is: What are three of your pet peeves?

I thought about listing some common pet peeves … so I wouldn’t sound like such a jerk. Gum snapping. Mean people. You know, the stuff that gets on all our nerves! But then I figured, it’s not honest. So here they are … my 100% honest (and a little bit jerky) pet peeves:

  1. Lateness. I just have to preface this by saying it’s not my fault! My mother absolutely drilled it into my brain when I was growing up that it is RUDE to be late. So we arrived everywhere at least 20 minutes early. This was particularly frustrating to me when it came to doctor’s appointments. “They’re going to make us wait an hour before our turn anyway!” I’d whine. But it didn’t matter. We were still there 20 minutes early. Due to these efforts, I am 95% of the time on time. In fact, I’m usually early. My brain just subconsciously goes to work calculating drive times and factoring in traffic possibilities and even pit stops. I don’t aim to be early. I just instinctively am. And it’s all because I was trained from infancy, lol. Most people … however, were not trained from infancy to be on time. I do appreciate that. And therefore, most people run 10-15 minutes late. I’m 15 minutes early …. they’re 15 minutes late. So you can see that I frequently end up with a delay. In order to be more proactive and to combat the feeling of frustration that used to quickly rise within me (and sometimes still does), I try and come prepared for the wait. I bring books, audio lessons, computer scrabble … anything that makes my wait a more constructive use of time. I’m working on turning what I could think of as a frustration into an enjoyable “bonus” time : )
  2. People who feel the need to inch closer to you in line. OH MY WORD. I FEEL YOUR BREATH ON MY NECK! I’m not sure if they think that the line will move faster if they keep inching closer and closer. But their cart literally hitting my heels makes me want to scream!!!! And so, logically, I scoot forward, trying to put a NORMAL amount of space between us. But inevitably, they inch up again. One day, you’ll read about the crazy lady in the Marshall’s line who lost it and screamed and pushed the person behind her away. Try not to think too poorly of me. I’ve kept it together for a long time now. But lately I feel like the problem is getting worse and if I don’t lose it soon at Marshalls, I’ll no doubt lose it at T.J. Maxx. You’ve all been warned. BACK. OFF.
  3. Gas stations in NY. Why, oh why can’t you guys get the little knob where you can just start the pump and then get back in your car?! It’s freezing out! They have them in Delaware. And in Pennsylvania. And Connecticut. And you know, every other state!!! And then there’s NJ. Cheap … and they pump it for you! Come on NY … get with it!

Ok, your turn. What’s your biggest pet peeve? Leave a comment in the box below.
