how to plan a killer Beautiful YOU senior session — delaware high school senior photography

I am soooo excited to be offering high school senior portraits (just for girls ; )) starting this year here in Delaware and the tri-state area (and beyond … Paris? yes, please!)! I’ve been dreaming up session ideas and can’t wait to get started! If I could rewind time and go back to when I was having my senior portraits taken, I would do everything differently. I had traditional studio portraits taken and they were … well … fine. The focus is accurate, the lighting is clean, and my head is “properly” tilted. But there’s nothing about my high school senior pictures that says anything about who I was at that point in my life. I look like every other high school senior who graduated in … well, eh hm, we’ll just leave the year out of this ; ) Now don’t get me wrong; I don’t see anything wrong with traditional senior portraits taken in a studio with your cap and gown or drape.  But for girls that want a little something more, I’m sooooo excited to offer them the chance to really express themselves and create art that will last forever. The chance to create something that truly expresses who you are right now … and maybe even hints to the direction you dream of heading in.

The options are limitless.

I’m just so excited because I know that stories are waiting to be told!

A senior session is an investment … in time and money. So how can you make the most of your session (whether it’s with me or another photographer)?

1. Choose the right photographer. Some photographers specialize in studio work, others in on-location work … some in both. Some shoot film … others digital. Some shoot both. The first step to having a fabulous session with me (or any other photographer) is to decide with all of your heart that the photographer is in fact the right person for the job. If you don’t think I am, that’s ok. There are so many amazing photographers in this area … keep looking … you’ll find the perfect fit. If you get excited when you click through my web site and blog and can really imagine the awesome images we could create together, then that excitement is literally HALF of the recipe for an amazing session. So phew … you’re half way there!

2. Book … and then start dreaming. Once you book your session, we’re going to set up a time to chat via phone or Skype (or in person if you prefer) so that we can spend some time nailing down all the details of your shoot. But first, start letting your mind wander. Take to Pinterest to start collecting some ideas that you think are great. You don’t need anything too concrete yet. But at least if you know what kinds of images you really love, it will give us a great jumping off point during your consultation. You can check out my Pinterest board for Senior Inspiration here.

3. It’s time to chat! As I mentioned in step 2, a consultation is important. So whether it’s via phone or Skype or in person, together we’re going to lay into place the details of your shoot. I can guide you as much as you need. Together we’ll come up with a theme and name for your shoot so that we can start organizing everything into a plan of action. We’ll also chat about hair and makeup. If you need any recommendations of salons and stylists who are perfect for your shoot, no problem, I know lots of awesome hair and makeup artists.

4. Create THE storyboard. We’ve named your shoot … we have our concept … now you can really have fun on Pinterest. Collect images, quotes, poems, and anything at all that you think embodies what you want to accomplish on your shoot. For example, below are some of the images I’ve collected in my winter wonderland board on Pinterest. I absolutely LOVE winter shoots … the light is amazing and chilly weather makes for gorgeous rosy cheeks! Plus, snow sure is pretty! You’ll notice that the board below includes some indoor and outdoor inspiration … perfect for winter. It also includes a few different outfits/looks … which is a great way to totally change up the look of your session. Additionally, you’ll notice that I’ve included a ballet picture on the board. Hobbies are always SOOOO much fun to work into at least part of your shoot!

5. Get gorgeous. As your shoot approaches, there are a few things you can do to ensure you look your best. 1.) Drink your water. Hydrated skin is beautiful skin. 2.) Don’t use new beauty products you’ve never tried since they may cause you to break out … and don’t experiment with new hair colors and/or cuts (unless you’re the adventurous type who does this all the time anyway). 3.) Eat healthy foods. We are what we eat. So fuel up on a nutritious, well-balanced diet full of fruits and veggies and you’re body will thank you. 4.) Don’t stress. We’ve had your consultation, you’ve got everything planned out … all will be well : ) Promise! 5.) Get your zzz’s. I’m not telling you anything new here. We all know that we look our best when we’re well rested.

6. Boom … an amazing session!

And there you have it. Really, it’s all about dreaming … imagining … and creating something special and unique that you and your family will cherish for years. I’m excited!!!! I hope you are, too. Feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions!

XOXO,
Kate
